Survival of the fittest - January Review

Well what a difference a favourable result makes! The euphoria felt as Chirag Patel headed into the bottom corner against Bison was something we’ve not experienced the likes of for many a year.

If you’d asked me at the start of the season what kind of game would be likely to spark that kind of reaction, I think beating the team top of the League at home 2-1 would have been top of the list ! – especially after the 7-2 mauling they inflicted on us earlier in the season.

The four games we’ve played this month have not been pretty and have been frustrating in different ways, – against Harrow St Mary’s we looked better at finding the net, but terrible at the back; against Ealing we looked clown-like in defence at times and were utterly toothless upfront; against Wilberforce, well, the referee wanted to be the centre of attention and two injury time goals flattered the score line (although it will be definitely worth reading Wilberforce’s piss take…. Sorry, match report of our team before the league game!) and then someone found the get out of jail card and used it against Bison.

So, what can we draw from January 2006? Well, it wasn’t going to be dull! And whilst I’d have preferred points from the Ealing game, I suppose we can’t grizzle at picking up three against Bison (shocking!). We’ve set ourselves up nicely now for a trip to South Kilburn to see if we can pull out of the drop zone for the first time since we had the four point deduction in September.

At this point it’s survival of the fittest - we have to match (and hopefully better) the results South Kilburn and Ealing manage to chalk up and, and all being well pick up some bonus points with our games in hand.

It is now time for my monthly awards:

Player of the Month

Harmeet Dhaliwal: It is no coincidence that the midfield looks much stronger with the bangra man playing.

Goal of the Month

There can only be one for me…. 70 yards out.. top corner!!... Who needs Beckham ??!!

Performance of the Month

Without a doubt the Bison game. I have not celebrated like that for a while! I would not have cared if the winner went in off the ref’s arse, any win is welcome!

Idiot of the month

Nick Lambert – The referee for the Wilberforce game. Not because of the sending off incident (King deserved to walk for a second yellow card), but because he did his best to ruin the game with wrong decision after wrong decision.

What does February bring? Our fight for survival enters a crucial stage. Up next: South Kilburn, a must win game - It’s starting to shout out “make or break” at you. Three points will take us out of the drop zone, but I know its gonna be a hard slog.

Keep it up boy’s FETPH
