Review of the month - March brings more hope
Where do I start? March has had everything! A nine goal thriller against Islington that could come back to haunt us come May, a real six-pointer that gave us our first league away victory of 2006 against condemned Ealing, and a hard earned point away to London Cup and Divisional Cup finalist’s Fenerbache.
But the biggest talking point will be the postponement of the Wilberforce game that followed an error by the Middlesex County League in the appointment of a certain match referee for the game.
Last month I made a point of mentioning that points needed to be picked up away from home. The lads have done extremely well (could have done better against Islington but then playing on plastic will always give them an advantage… for those of you old enough, remember Luton & QPR ??) to have picked up 4 of the 9 points that were played for away from Warren Farm this month is a good return…. Our best for over a year!
I feel that the team has gelled at the right time and we are now in the right frame of mind to steer clear of an unthinkable relegation. Tactically we have been able to bring something different to a side that in previous months was worryingly one-dimensional. Most of all we are now bringing the best out of the lads, physically and mentally, and they have not looked at all like a side in a relegation dogfight. It is clear that the belief is back there.
I don’t mind admitting I am wrong sometimes, so here goes. Sandro, if you are reading this, (he might be!) I am sorry. You are a good enough striker to play here - you can get us out of trouble…. If you turn up!
People might say that we have only picked up points in March because we have been lucky against average sides. But I see no reason why we can’t surprise a few of teams in our remaining games of the season.
With only four games to play April will see a nail biting climax to an interesting season as ourselves, South Kilburn and Islington all have seemed to pick up form at the same time … watch out North Greenford!
It is now time for my monthly awards:
Player of the Month
I don’t know if he was necessarily our best player, but he was our most valuable certainly. Raman Kaplish wins his first award of the season.
Goal of the Month
Rob Howard’s goal versus Islington. Great team move, and it finally ended the goal drought!
Performance of the Month
Hard to say….. Although we won the Ealing game my vote goes to the draw against Fenerbache, with half the team missing the result was a colossal achievement.
Idiot of the month
The cock up by MCFL that led to the appointment of a certain referee after being guaranteed that this ‘error’ would not happen again!
What does April bring? Big games against St Johns and the re-arranged fixture against Wilberforce away, and North Greenford and Sporting Benfica at home. None of these games are particularly easy, so it is vital that we can take the pressure off ourselves somewhat with a strong performance in our next outing that will send signals out to our relegation rivals.
We end March where we started it in 11th place, on 16 points, By the time we play St Johns on April 8th we will know what we will have to do…. Put your seatbelts on and get ready for a real rollercoaster ride!
