An ’orrible October
Following people questioning my sanity I’ve written this review in good old plain English!!
In a pre-season meet up of first team players we said at the end of October that Wanderers could be top
of the league, but no one expected it to be Wilberforce Wanderers! Getting to grips with Yogi’s massive
blunder which left us on minus 3 points has resulted in a mid table position being swapped for wooden spoon candidates.
In previous years I would have thrown in the towel there and then but there have been positive signs from the last few
games that have injected a little more optimism into my mind. Four points from a possible 9 in the league, elimination
from the County Cup (albeit to Premiership opposition) and a defeat to bottom of the table Ealing, in a game in which the
score line didn’t reflect the performance.
So where is it going wrong? It has come down to nothing more than pure bad luck at times (Ealing, Oct 29th), yet on other
occasions we have deserved all we got (North Greenford Utd, Oct 8th). It is enough to make your blood boil.
Although October wasn’t a complete disaster, there are still so many unanswered questions - especially when it comes down to
our small, inexperienced squad. What really infuriates me is that a member of key players picking and choosing when they are
available to play……. Let me make it crystal clear, unless we start getting 100% commitment then don’t expect to start when you turn up!
As you may be beginning to realise, I like the glass to be half full when it comes to Hounslow Wanderers, so I would like to remind
everyone, perhaps even myself, that the season is a marathon, not a sprint. On a positive note, we are still in a better position
than last season (if we take the 4 points deducted into consideration), and no one is out of the race by any means in this division.
We just have to concentrate on winning more games than we lose and wait to see where it takes us.
It is now time for my monthly awards:
Player of the Month
I suppose this will have to go to Rick Degun. If it wasn’t for his midfield presence, and a couple of great assists along the way, the month could have been even worse.
Goal of the Month
A couple of really strong contenders here. With both Sangha and the Rickstar finally finding the net, the winner is from the South Kilburn game. Yes,
that’s right, Sangha’s second goal. Could just have kick started our League Season!
Performance of the Month
A toss up between the Harefield game and South Kilburn one. Being 2-0 down at half time against Harefield and getting a point was a fine achievement but for
me the 2-1 win over South Kilburn just nicks it. It wasn’t just the fact we won so comfortably, but the fact that we didn’t let our league position affect us.
The character that the lads showed to get all three points and more importantly back into positive points is a real sign of encouragement.
Idiot of the month
A combined effort this month….the award goes to all the 1st team squad players who have taken ‘leave’ on those warm Saturday afternoons!
So what will November bring? Hopefully a sign of improvement that can keep us moving up in the right direction. As long as we are no further
behind the leaders than we are now, and take some points off both Bison and St Johns then we should be okay. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint!
